Transformation invariably begins when we start to ask questions. These are the questions posed not by our Ego but our soul. I like to think of these questions as "whispers of the soul." While they start out as faint whispers, if left unanswered can build up in intensity like a snowball rolling down a hill. There's no stopping our soul from beckoning; we might as well turn toward it and listen.
The questions our soul poses aren't your typical questions; they likely shake up the life we have grown accustomed to, whether it serves our soul or not. But I have a question for us all: if our soul is beckoning—and its purpose is to evolve and transform into the fullest expression of itself—then why do we ignore its call?
I'll tell you why. Because everything the soul wants threatens the very life our ego fights to maintain: comfort, security, safety and certainty. And, yes, it is extremely hard to live the life our soul wants, but it's also equally rewarding. And like any kind of change, it takes time to get used to a new kind of living, but eventually we get the swing of things. And even better, we get to enjoy a life that feels free, authentic, satisfying and peaceful.
So when the soul whispers late in the night or while we're daydreaming of the life that is trying to call to us, know that shushing the voice will only prolong the inevitable. What we resist, persists and soon it will be trying much more noticeable attempts to get our attention.
Asking the proper questions is the central action of transformation. Questions are the key that causes the secret doors of the psyche to swing open.
- Clarissa Pinkola Estes
When that voice speaks, listen. And ask yourself what's keeping you from asking those questions: why we live a life that is far from satisfying or meaningful. why we stay when we know we must move on, why we sell ourselves short when we know we're meant for greatness, why we love others but cannot love ourselves.
THESE are the questions that lead to transformations. THESE are the questions our soul is prodding us to answer. And it is these very questions that begin a journey that leads us to the life we dream of.
