Drop the Baggage

God recently revealed to me that I am holding onto the weight of my past. By holding onto my past, I’m not only carrying around a weight I was never meant to carry, but I am blocking the blessings of God’s plan for me in the future. So today I ask you: What weight are you carrying that is hindering your upward momentum?

So then, with endurance, let’s also run the race that is laid out in front of us, since we have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us. Let’s throw off any extra baggage, get rid of the sin that trips us up, and fix our eyes on Jesus, faith’s pioneer and perfecter.

Hebrews 12:1-2 CEB

I had a dream of cycling uphill with several persons on the bike as cargo, symbolizing that I was carrying more than I was meant to and making it difficult to continue peddling forward on life in an upward direction towards the prize.

I realized how much I’d been carrying that I was never meant to including habits holding me back in holding patterns of my past cycle. It was making it quite painful to continue peddling into the future God was writing for me with so much extra weight.

God doesn’t intend for us to move forward with a backpack full of past mistakes, guilt, shame, heartache or attachments — sin that so easily trips us up because we can’t let go of the things we once clung to before we met Christ and dedicate our lives to following him.

If that weight continues to carry we won’t make it to the destination nor will we enjoy much of the journey, being so caught up in what is behind us or worried about what is before us with the fears and doubts we haven’t yet given to God.

So, what is in your backpack? What are you allowing to go along for the ride that is making it strenuous to travel upward and forward? Give it over to God; ask for strength to muster the courage to say goodbye to old self and habits and sin and say hello to the new weightless version of you that is beckoning you forward into greater heights and purpose in the Lord.

"Then Job answered the Lᴏʀᴅ and said: 'I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.'"

Job 42:1-2

Lord, I am tired of carrying around so much weight from my past that I cannot bear to move forward. I said at your feet all that I am carrying that I am not meant to carry any longer, nor can I carry into the future that is waiting for me, I trust that you will make all things good if I surrender to your will and let you guide me and my steps forward. In your name Jesus. Amen.

“Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭25‬:‭4‬-‭5‬
